First and only in its class
Being the first and only in its class, the fact that the Ford Hydrogen 999 set a new speed record is not the biggest of surprises. It's good to see that new technology is being pushed to its limits. In this case the limit was 207.297 miles per hour on the illustrious Boneville Salt Flats in Utah. The Ford Hydrogen 999 finds its place in the 200MPH Club of Bonneville Speed Week.
Ford cooperated with Ohio State University, Ballard Power Systems and Roush in order to set this record. “What we’ve accomplished is nothing short of an industry first," said Matt Zuehlk, lead engineer on the project. Ford has spent 10 years developing hydrogen vehicles and has made their next step with the Hydrogen 999 in hopes that fuel cell technology will indeed become the next big thing.
