Jaguar and Land Rover still on chopping block

Alan Mulally, CEO at Ford, has stated today that Ford is not planning on selling the Volvo brand any time soon. He was quoted during a conference call: “Our plan now is not to sell Volvo but to improve its cost structure and brand positioning. I think we can do substantially better than where we are today.” Ford has completed a strategic review of Volvo, and even though Volvo suffered an undisclosed loss (rumoured to be 'more than 100 million' according to insiders) Ford is still convinced of the long term profitability of the brand.

Volvo of course owns a state-of-the-art Safety Center in Gothernburg, Sweden and shares its C1 and EUCD platforms with Ford vehicles which may have given Ford second thoughts about selling the Swedish manufacturer in the first place. Ford will now have Volvo focussing on the premium car segment, in a similar way that Audi is so successfully doing.

Jaguar and Land Rover are still on the chopping block and are rumoured to be sold early next year. Alan Mulally: “Discussions are progressing with selected parties who have expressed interest and we anticipate these discussions will culminate in an agreement no later than early next year.”

Later this month the new Jaguar XF will go into production in the UK, and will 'make or brake' the English specialty manufacturer. In 2005 Jaguar closed its Coventry plant but if demand for the new XF exceeds expectations than Jaguar can call in the help of PAG stable mate Land Rover. Jaguar and Land Rover have a labour agreement which allowes them to move workers from one company to the other if need be, but no decision has been made just yet on this topic.

The two companies are better to be separated because their corporate cultures are so different. PAG was not able to generate good added value or Ford could not get sufficient synergy effect that was expected before marriage. Also, Volvo cannot be a premium brand as Audi in future but they should rather go for "nice company for nice people" but that can only be achieved with better partner who is definitely not Ford.

Vokvo is known for safe dependable cars, that are neither premium or non premium. they are just great cars, their slogan should be great cars for great people.

I fully agree to you, coopergt. My idea on Volvo's slogan should be "The nicest people drive Volvo.

selling off the british i suppose... i think that it's a good move to keep volvo, perhaps on getting their safety technologies to their ford cars.

and well done on using british spelling for "rumoured", because autoblog uses american english and mpg, "hood", "trunk" and "windshield"...

volvo is for people that like european cars but cant afford german cars. they portray themselves modest and get a volvo.

by bluemagic | November 10, 2007 5:45 AM
And stupid people like you probably cant even afford Hyundais. Volvos in general are more expensive than Volkswagens, and some of the cheaper BMWs Mercedes and Audis. You have no idea what you're talking about so just stop making retarded comments.

I always said that Jaguar and Land Rover may be in trouble but Volvo don't. Volvo is the most sucessful luxury marque throughout the worst and good years as today.

Volvo is probably the world's most clean auto company and this should be one of the most important points to be advocated, although their products may be less prestigeous than German competitors. I have never heard scandales/dark histories like what Quandt family, the biggest shareholder of BMW, did for Nazis in the past.

who cares. its a B-M-W pal.

Get over the anti-german nazi BS, that was 68 years ago. You think ur precious ford didnt support the americans through funding, military vehicles etc..? or GM? the japs had mitsubishi everybody killed everybody thats y it was called a world war. Buy a rinspeed if u want a "neutral" car brand. As to this article its no surprise ford can't afford to sell volvo, they act like they are god and volvo needs their wisdom to stay afloat. I think its the other way around, volvo lost 100million, Ford 12 billion. u do the math, thats 120x more $$.

radmeister speaks the truth.

by bluemagic | November 12, 2007 5:04 AM
Shut up. He has a point, but yu probably don't even know what he's talking about. You're just so opinionated about your precious German brands and hate everything else that you cant contain yourself from making these reatrded comments about how everything thats not German sucks. Just get off this site.

Funny thing is, if Hitler was alive, silversedanman aka bluemagic would be first in the chopping blocks for stupidity and ignorance. Why do these guys insist on coming back with different names after being banned? We all know it's pretty obvious with the comments being made it's you?
