The five-door counterpart to Chevrolet's Aveo sedan has arrived to make its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, starring alongside a new initiative which will roll out on existing and new Chevrolet models to promote the use of fuel-saving technologies. The Aveo5 hatchback is touted as a 'fuel-efficient five-door' likely to become the lowest-priced car sold in America when it enters showrooms early next year.

A subcompact car designed for the maximising of interior cabin space while reducing exterior dimensions, the Aveo5 is 'small car with a big attitude'. It will retain its signature roominess, which continues to be able to seat five six-foot tall occupants in comfort and an upright seating position.

Set to arrive into North American dealerships from early 2008, the refreshed Aveo5 will boast an introductory environmentally-friendly unit - an advanced 1.6-litre Ecotec I4 engine which delivers more power while providing greater fuel economy. Estimated highway fuel consumption is at 34 mpg in manual transmission guise.

In addition to more efficient engines and the more compact car's more spacious cabin, further equipment is on offer to tempt 'motorists youthful in spirit'. GM's OnStar recovery system is fitted as standard with turn-by-turn Navigation as well as the XM radio system.

New Aveo5 subcompact makes North American debut

LOS ANGELES – During a brisk parade of vehicles ranging from a gasoline-powered subcompact to a hydrogen fuel cell crossover, extended-range electric vehicle and three hybrids, Chevrolet today rolled out a major initiative at the Los Angeles Auto Show – Chevrolet Fuel Solutions – to aggressively promote the fuel-saving technologies available in the brand’s current and future lineups.

The event included the North American debut of the newly redesigned Aveo5 subcompact, the five-door companion to the popular Aveo sedan.

The redesigned, next-generation 2009 Chevrolet Aveo5 fuel-efficient five-door subcompact, which arrives at North American dealerships early next year, features new exterior styling, a refined and spacious new interior, and an advanced 1.6L Ecotec I4 engine with variable valve timing (VVT) that delivers more power with an estimated highway fuel economy of 34 mpg (with the standard manual transmission).

Already known for its generous content for the segment, the 2009 Aveo5 features more upgrades and refinements including standard OnStar with Turn-by-Turn Navigation and available XM radio – two customer-pleasing features that make the vehicle a more formidable contender in the segment and even more attractive to North American motorists who are youthful in spirit.

Chevrolet will continue to position Aveo as a “small car with a big attitude,” keeping its signature tall-car roominess that accommodates five, six-foot tall occupants in a comfortable, ergonomic upright seating position.

'new' this is the least 'new' car since the VW Fox or the Rover Streetwise, they've hardly bothered to facelift it.

A Korean Manufactured Chevy. Not a BAD little car for the money. I think the "new" front end styling does make it look more agressive, which is not a bad thing either. I find it a bit amusing that a number of people knock the fact that GM has set up a new plant in Bupyong Korea, and improved the admittedly terrible quality of the Daewoo line, and they say things like. "Koreans have never made a decent car"...then, these same people will turn around and extoll the virtues of the Hyundai, either forgetting, or never knowing, that they are made in Korea as well. I guess for some people, as long as it's made by GM it's "Garbage" and if it has a Japanese badge, it's "Fantastic!" The truth is, every Manufacturer has their successes, and their failures. I remember well the Toyota Corollas of the 60's and early 70's and while the 1600 CC engines generally went about 50,000 miles before needing rings and valves, there was little use in doing the job, because often the bodies were literally falling off them by that time. The moral of this story is,...Don't be too quick to judge ANY manufacturer based on past performance, and keep an open mind when looking at the new crop of vehicles available for your money,...you MIGHT be surprised!
