Ford have finally confirmed the rally car-inspired Focus RS superhatch for production, releasing this first official teaser photo ahead of a concept version due mid 2008, perhaps at London's British Motor Show. The model follows in the footsteps of predecessors the original RS and RS Cosworth Escort. Caught earlier this year doing the development rounds on the Nurburgring, the RS hot hatch is set to re-draw the line between performance and value.

Power will come from a modified version of Volvo's turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine with power produced expected at 280 hp and torque of 400 lb.-ft, propelling the RS somewhat beyond that of the 225 hp ST model. The RS will face tough competition from that of the new Mitsubishi Evo X and Subaru Impreza STi.

Expected performance upgrades include the stiffening and lowering of suspension as well as upgraded brakes, while exterior design features will get a significant upgrade from 'kinetic' to 'racy'. Styling enhancements will include blistered wheel arches, bonnet air vents, new wings and spoilers - the interior boasting a sportier, more coseted environment. All the enhancements will bid to give the RS as much ethos aesthetically as it will deliver dynamically.

The production model Focus RS is set debut in 2009 following a concept version the year before - stay tuned for further details.

All wheel drive? No? Heh... Sorry, maybe interesting for Ford fans, but not a real competition for Evo and STI.

All wheel drive? No? Sorry... Interesting car, maybe potential buy for Ford fans but not a real competition for Evo and STI.

The ST has really good handling, so if this thing is better it should be awesome. Too bad about ST build quality issues though. Interesting battle looming between it and STI. Golf's R 32 is out of its overpriced depth here.

400 lb.-ft and 280bhp? possibly the other way round? i think that'd make more sense, if it's supposed to re-draw that messy line

its a pity that Ford's new design philosophy, although it looks good, is way to similar!! the Ford Mondeo have similar head lamps as that of the Focus!!:O n so does the Kuga concept carry the same headlamp design!!

Ford win the WRC, it is something we have to appreciate and acknowledge, this car should be a pure driving machine, go head to head with STi and mitsubishi Evo

That car lost battle against EVO and STI before it+s borned - no AWD with 280 HP and ~400 Nm and that engine torque regulation that cuts of the power. That car is definitely not true Escort/Sierra Cosworth alternate. Some of Ford fans stayed disapointed.Let's hope Ford revises decision...

competition is tightened enough than ever before, S3, R 32, OPC(Astra),R26 Megane Sport,STI and 130i and the rest hetches are fighting a loosing battle.
