Press Release

Brimming with genuine character, the new GLK-Class is set to take the world of compact SUVs by storm. Yet it is not just the distinctive all-rounder's practical and appealingly compact body form that sets it apart from the competition. It also brings together what were previously seen as entirely contradictory attributes. The Agility Control suspension serves up a unique blend of outstanding handling dynamics, exceptional driving safety and superlative ride comfort. Meanwhile the sophisticated, variable 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system joins forces with the latest electronic control systems to deliver consummate on-road performance and superb off-road suitability. It is precisely this kind of combination that lends the GLK-Class such immense appeal. The GLK-Class may be one of the more road-oriented Mercedes-Benz SUVs, but the "G" - alluding to the archetypal Mercedes off-roader - still has a rightful place in the model name.

Superlative performance comes courtesy of the powerful yet economical and eco-friendly four and six-cylinder engines. The BlueEFFICIENCY version of the GLK 220 CDI features the new entry-level four-cylinder diesel engine from Mercedes-Benz, which develops 125 kW/170 hp yet only consumes 6.9 litres of diesel per hundred kilometres. And the unshakeable foundations of the GLK-Class are similarly impressive. The highly robust body is key to the pioneering passive-safety setup, the extremely low noise levels, the exceptional degree of interior comfort - to produce that typical Mercedes feeling of wellbeing - and the high value retention. Furthermore, exemplary appointments and attractive equipment packages make the GLK stand out from the compact-SUV masses. Plus state-of-the-art systems such as the leading-edge PRE-SAFE safety concept and the Intelligent Light System (ILS) are available in this market segment for the very first time.

With its poised, confident presence, the mere look of the GLK-Class leaves one in no doubt about its intent to conquer the compact premium SUV segment. It is arguably the most sophisticated of all takes on this particular theme. And it displays echoes of the G-Class, the founding father of the Mercedes-Benz SUV family. Design chief Prof. Peter Pfeiffer takes up the story: "With the G-Class we created a style icon that has been a benchmark in SUV design for the past 30 years. Combining this bold concept with the latest Mercedes-Benz design idiom makes the GLK a vehicle of genuine character."

No other model in the compact-SUV segment, past or present, comes close to matching the GLK's distinctively expressive appearance. The body is beautifully proportioned (length 4528 mm, width 1840 mm, height 1689 mm), while there is a special allure in the interplay between the classic angular shape and the typical design features found in all contemporary Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. Here the unmistakable design idiom, consisting of taut lines and large, expansive surfaces, is combined with the typical body features of a practical off-road vehicle, such as short overhangs, an upright front end, slim roof pillars, a steeply raked windscreen and taut roof lines. Rather than being a stylistic end in itself, however, the body design allows the typical advantages of an off-road vehicle to be introduced to the more road-oriented compact-SUV category for the first time. Large angles of approach and departure plus good ground clearance make off-road ventures a sheer joy. The outstandingly clear layout of the body and good all-round visibility, combined with the raised seating position, enhance everyday practicality and ensure relaxed driving, even in dense city traffic.

Superlative ride comfort, outstanding handling dynamics and excellent off-road performance

The AGILITY CONTROL suspension on which the GLK-Class is founded displays a high level of flexibility and resolves a conflict of aims that particularly affects the SUV class, where chassis engineers want to create a vehicle that is both sportily agile and comfortably smooth yet one which can also cope with off-road terrain. If the focus is on sporty, active handling, the suspension and, above all, the shock absorbers need to display a certain firmness, which precludes access to the brand's typical suspension comfort and limits the off-road options. If the vehicle is set up with softer dampers to ensure suspension comfort and off-road capability, dynamic handling naturally suffers. The solution is "amplitude-dependent damping". In this system, the damping forces of the shock absorbers are configured to respond flexibly rather than lineally. In normal driving mode on moderately contoured roads or during slow off-road manoeuvres, the system responds softly, enhancing both the occupants' comfort and the vehicle's off-road capability. To ensure that this level of comfort is maintained when driving hard or performing abrupt evasive manoeuvres, in these situations the dampers deliver a harder performance, ensuring optimum handling stability. At the same time, the driver of the GLK is supported by speed-sensitive power steering, specified as standard for the V6 models, which provides the optimum level of steering assistance for the situation in hand. Parking and off-road manoeuvring are made much easier because maximum power assistance is available. At higher speeds, the assistance is reduced in favour of greater handling stability.

All the base models in the GLK series are fitted with 17-inch, size 235/60 R 17 light-alloy wheels. In conjunction with the exterior sports package, which is included as standard when the car first comes onto the market, or the off-road styling package, all models are shod with mixed-size tyres which, together with the AGILITY CONTROL suspension and the asymmetric power distribution between the front and rear axle, form the basis for a even better transfer of power between the wheels and the road. And the more effective this power transfer, the less frequently the electronic control systems need to intervene. The road-oriented exterior sports package features size 7.5 J x 19 light-alloy wheels with 235/50 R 19 tyres at the front and size 8.5 J x 19 wheels with 255/45 R 19 tyres at the rear. If the GLK is ordered with the off-road styling package, the front axle has size 7.5 J x 17 light-alloy wheels with 235/60 R 17 tyres, while the rear axle features size 8.0 J x 17 wheels with 255/55 R 17 tyres. All models are equipped with a TIREFIT system for repairing tyre damage. A compact spare wheel, which can be used on the front or rear axle, is available as an optional extra.

hey guys, the boss says we need to make something to compete with the X3! -Really? Damn it, i'm so lazy today. Ok give me 5 minutes and a ruler, i will work something out.

by afterace2 | April 22, 2008 1:06 PM
lolx!! lolx! :D hey but it looks better than the X3.. atleast in the blue colour! :O

by wolff | April 22, 2008 3:53 PM
yea but keep in mind that the X3 is already 4 or even 5 years old ! I like the GLK more only from the front and from the inside, the sides are overcombined and the rear looks like it is falling apart IMO.

by afterace2 | April 22, 2008 4:35 PM
That thing is so Fugly!

by SRT8 | April 22, 2008 4:42 PM
And I thought the X3 is boxy ....

by Speedoholic | April 22, 2008 6:37 PM
What an elegant car !!

by german-cars-lover | April 22, 2008 6:38 PM
that's amazing. really tastefull.

by joobs | April 22, 2008 7:00 PM
i second that

by wjaprep | April 22, 2008 11:21 PM
lol at tires. This thing will ride horribly. Look like a boxy jeep/landrover. Have no power. Won't be able to tow anything bigger then a tent trailer. And with 22-23mpg it really isn't much of anything... Think spyshot of the camaro with the hitch... The camaro could probably tow just as much, have more power and get better fuel economy all at once. And it's what many of you consider to be "American crap"

by Joe_Limon | April 22, 2008 7:20 PM
+1!!

by lelu | April 23, 2008 3:14 PM
i'll tell u y we consider it crap!! coz u just dont seem to know wat to compare to wat!! :O a Camaro is a sportscar..er.. well, watever it is.. :P n the GLK is a softroader.. how on Earth r u probably for Christ's sake able to compare the 2?? :O

by wolff | April 23, 2008 7:59 PM
how could I compare the 2? well it would be unfair competition if I compared it to a real suv.

by Joe_Limon | April 24, 2008 5:43 PM
*unfair towards the merc

by Joe_Limon | April 24, 2008 5:44 PM
u've actually got SUVS.. i mean luxury SUVs.. Escalade.. hmmm.. looks like the trucks.. well, i mean the lorry~truck looks better than those hugely obnoxius thing!! n well, Hummer?? :O lolx.. is that even close to being luxurious?? :? compare the right cars.. if u wanna compare the Camaro, which i do agree, an American car which actually has the a good mix of quality, style, power n some sense of fuel economy.. finally a car so pretty since the Duesenbergs.. :P yea, if u really wanna compare that, then take on the SLR, SL, XK, 6er... well, i'm sure they'd beat that car in terms of quality... but it'll be a close match.. if u wanna compare this car^^ the GLK to an American car, all i have to say is that there is no such niche car to compare to!!:P

by wolff | April 25, 2008 6:00 PM
hey Joe.. i shouldnt be blaming u.. the American market doesnt have that much of variety.. i mean American manufactured cars.. u have some HUGE cars.. n then some more HUGER cars n then the HUGEST gas guzzling cars.. n which would leave the whole world wondering y on Earth that was ever built! :O n then the next day u'd find some War headlines!! :P OIL OIL everywhere.. not a drop for my car!! :(:(

by wolff | April 25, 2008 6:02 PM
You do not buy a SUV for fuel economy reasons... So a luxury suv with no power (potential) that doesn't even get decent mileage sucks in all sense of the word. It'd be like someone making a car to compete against the Veyron, that got 15mpg.... But only had 400hp... And weighs just as much. Who cares if it get's better fuel economy? Super cars just aren't eco-friendly, and neither are suv's. Sure I am all for hybrid's in suv's so that they burn less fuel, after all that is cheaper at the pump. But I am against a vehicle whose designers made a suv with 1/3 more fuel economy by cutting the power in half. I will compare it to the GMC Hybrid Yukon, it get's 21city/22highway mpg. Just under the mercedes, but it still has it's 6.0L v8 with 332hp/367lb-ft. Also, imo the Yukon also looks nicer and has more room to haul stuff around in. This is why I compared the merc to a Camaro, it simply can't compete on any basis with North American SUV's.

by Joe_Limon | April 26, 2008 2:48 AM
I'm speechless.. but then thats ur personal taste!! :P

by wolff | May 5, 2008 9:06 AM
Mercedes-benz are trying to compete with all the other companies from Toyota --Rolls Ryce .. i don't know if they are getting more profits this way ???

by nendor | April 22, 2008 9:37 PM
just ugly

by leons | April 22, 2008 9:52 PM
boxy, like an suv should be, built in germany like a mercedes should and, as they say... It should be able to go off road, meets my requirements, I want one

by wjaprep | April 22, 2008 11:24 PM
Looks like a couple of Subaru guys got a job over at Mercedes. You take your design, change it up (a little bit), throw a few Merc cues in it, and what do you get? The all-new Mercedes Forester.

by 4rings | April 22, 2008 11:31 PM
I like it! Well done!

by 3Iceman | April 23, 2008 1:39 AM
this is the ugliest mercedes i've ever seen...it's like they just hammered down a stock GL with rulers

by dli6990 | April 23, 2008 3:07 AM
really ugly

by mirdif | April 23, 2008 10:04 AM
Mercedes came up with so many classes Such as .. R..B..GL.. and the GLK ..i don't know what is their strategy

by nendor | April 23, 2008 11:28 AM
I think theyre trying to apeal to everyone, but as far as im concerned the Mercedes line up should be the c class (just sedan), e class (sedan and wagon w/ a coupe and convertible version replacing the clk), S class (sedan and coupe, renaming the cl, because it is an s class coupe basically) glk class (suv,no m and purposeless r class, gl is to much) g class (suv) sl class (roadster) slk class (roadster)

and thats it, just 7 classes.

by wjaprep | April 24, 2008 3:40 AM
i live this car! it is the one i would get... not the audi not the bmw but the mercedes! i totaly luv it!

by BabyMilo | April 23, 2008 11:31 AM
How much have you been paid to say that?

by lelu | April 23, 2008 3:15 PM
Eh, I agree i want the Merc too...

by wjaprep | April 24, 2008 3:36 AM
OH! i'm so excited for AMG to get their hands on this...

by greenacre | April 23, 2008 5:10 PM
To the people who do not like that GLK. Drive Renault and you will forgive everything, even X3 and all these eastern "Brambandaleros". GLK is a nice boxy car could replace X6, smaller but not cheapish.

by alessandro | April 23, 2008 8:24 PM
love this car..best looking soft roader...bye - bye x3 and Q5

by phobos | April 24, 2008 8:37 AM
Definitely would pick this over the X3, but maybe not the Q5

by reddis | April 26, 2008 12:08 AM
The MB design is not have been, let say, shiniest in a way. Like a milk, when it scrambles you have no choice but just wait for when it will turn to the kind of the cheese. But that one, GLK is a real proof of very good design. Very rear can make "boxy" to feel "sexy" with hint of enlightened gracia.

by alessandro | April 26, 2008 5:49 PM
i'm getting one when i get the money :) couple years, yippeee

by maddawg0 | May 2, 2008 8:13 AM
this car has seriously everything i would ever want... since the coast of fuel is gonna cost as much as diesel anyways, may as well go with diesel, gobs of torque, good fuel mileage, updated 4x4 system that finally works flawlessly, and an SUV... sign me up!
