The distance between Mannheim and Pforzheim may only be 106 kilometers, but to many Mercedes-Benz fans these two cities spark immediate interest. 120 years ago, on 5 August 1888, Bertha Benz and her two sons, Eugen and Richard, set off on the 106 km journey in her husband's designed motor car only to return a few days later without any any major incidents. This first 'long distance' journey gave the motor car the breakthrough is had been waiting for. The rest is history.

“Bertha Benz’s long-distance journey was the start of a triumphant march which the automobile has continued to make around the world ever since,” said Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG.

The sculpture was revealed two days ago on Bertha Benz's birth day (May 3 1849) and was designed and built by local artist René Dantes. The monument is inspired by the three-wheeler Bertha drove and is a representation of movement, or as Dantes put it: “this historic journey of 1888 was a moving experience in every sense of the word.” The sculputer can be found in the heart of Pforzheim on the Waisenhausplatz.

Beautiful piece of art and more, it is good design: arrogant photo shoppers should be forced to see it may be some of them will discover a difference between design and the picture making.
