The power figure of 638hp was released nearly two months a go after it was finally officially confirmed but we were still left wondering what kind of performance we could expect out of the Corvette ZR1's LS9 6.2-liter surpercharged engine. Today that wait is over as the Corvette has once again proved its domination in straight line acceleration with a 0-60mph time of just 3.4 seconds and will reach 100mph from standstill in 7 seconds flat. Additionally for those of you interesting in testing out the sheer power and torque of this machine may well be interested to know GM have announced it can do the quarter mile in 11.3 seconds.

According to Ed Peper, North American Vice President, Chevrolet. "There's simply no other vehicle in the world that does a better job of balancing performance, price and fuel economy." Although we may find a few GT-R and 911 fans willing to differ with this opinion. For comparisons sake the straight-line speed is quicker than Nissan GT-R whose 0-60mph time stands at 3.5 seconds (although there have been reports it is 3.3 seconds) and it matches the 0-60mph performance of the Porsche 911 Turbo.

Also announced today has been the pricing, we expected it around the $100K and it has proved to be a fairly accurate expectation with the final MSRP coming in at $103,300 which includes the destination charge but will have a $1700 gas guzzler tax added on top of this. The price of the Corvette ZR1 can be boosted by a further $12,000 with the optional chrome wheels and uplevel interior package.

Nice car. But I was expecting a quicker 0-60mph time with the additional 133hp it has over the Z06.

by AG4 | June 17, 2008 10:13 PM
133hp more but only 0.3s chopped from 0-60 time? 103300...price is not bad, well...we all know how bad the markups will be tho....

by nardow12 | June 17, 2008 11:04 PM
It's harder to get a rwd car to get a faster 0-60 time, once you have decent power, weight starts to play a bigger and bigger role. In fact, I am amazed that they got it to to 0-60 in that time, especially when you compare it to the launch control system on the equally quick gtr.

by joe_limon | June 17, 2008 11:12 PM
amazing muscle car. so different to a gtr. but i love both.

I wonder what the Ring time would be like... Does anyone think that this monster is able to go below 7:30?

by trespasser | June 17, 2008 11:18 PM
it'll be very close

to much engine ...to much talk...let se it aon track and road .....and then talk! americans dont do as much as they talk...the engine its still advanced as 60 years ago

by _M7_ | June 18, 2008 12:15 AM
haha, you crack me up. All you do is talk, and rip on peoples hard work. So does that make you the pessimistic version of the car companies spokes people? I won't even bother on trying to explain how advanced the engine is to you. You are to faithful to listen/learn.

by joe_limon | June 18, 2008 1:13 AM
I always laugh when ppl say OHV is old tech do a google search DOHC & SOHC have been around for a long time too since 1912 i think Fiat was the first.

by Davethepetrolhead | June 18, 2008 6:15 AM
i'm sorry but he's right. give a 6.2 litre supercharged engine to the europeans and see what they can do with it. hell, the N/A 6.2 AMG engine will do 550 bhp with the right ECU setup and exhaust. all americans can do is build big engines and shout loud about it. no replacement for displacement? as if...

by sub39h | June 18, 2008 3:14 PM
sub39h - i am sure you would agree that the one defining difference between the corvette engine and the AMG is cost.

by tdroesch | June 18, 2008 5:00 PM
blah blah blah...M7 you are boring people.

by MiracleWhipp | June 19, 2008 1:23 AM
agree with _M7_.. but got to admit... it works..... I'd never buy a corvette, but I do respect it. Kinda good looking, price is always good et it goes like hell.. so !

Here we go again with the questioning of the advancement of these engines. If chevy wants to use a pushrod engine let them these engines have proved to be great on the C5R and C6R and have won multiple championships at Lamans. Chevy has tried using a more "advance" engine with the last zr1 but went back to the pushrod. Ls based egines are light and powerfull and very realiable i have one in my car and never gave me a problems.

Hail to the new King...GT-R is nice and all...but this is a true drivers car :) I have to back up Joe, the 0-60 is especially good time considering the tires are run-flats.

You guys talk about crap american engines. Number one rule in life kids; "If it aint broke dont fix it". The Chevy V8s have been punishing european versions at least in output for years on the race track and on the street. It might be an old school pushrod but at the end of the day it works...and cause its a Chevy V8, its always gonna work.

0-100mph in just 7 seconds!!!!!!!!!!! imagine that Nissan GT-R and 911 Turbo are far behinde after the 60mph mark! from stand till 60 they are beside....for 4 sec and after that they are disappearing!!! And that is from European guy and from Porsche lover!!! But anyway I think that there is better car....Porsche 911 GT2....yes

by Swifthead | June 18, 2008 3:45 AM
If pushrod engines are so bad why are they so consistently competitive with the competition that is consistently much more expensive? I guess next you will start on the "buggy spring" argument. I can't wait to see what this thing does for top speed. What a great package... Especially for the price.

by flyerbry | June 18, 2008 4:26 AM
Not to mention the fact that these push-rod engines, even Ford motors, can withstand fairly heavy punishment and heavy duty mileage at least in stock form. Push-rods = less moving parts = less wear and tire in the short and long term.

by xanavi23 | June 18, 2008 4:33 AM
0-100 is impressive but if I was writing the check for this thing, I'd probably just get a Z06, pocket the rest or purchase a SC and install it myself. The Corvette is the only American built car I'd ever consider buying but considering it's power plant/displacement compared to the GT-R and 911 T is it really fair?

by RobERob | June 18, 2008 4:47 AM
I dunno, the ZR1 isn't just a z06 with a supercharger. It has tuned suspension carbon fiber body/roof panels, huge ceramic disc brakes as well as many other goodies.

by joe_limon | June 18, 2008 6:43 AM
$103k for a Corvette? No thanks. The Viper is a good reason why you don't spend that kind of money on an American car.

by Xenicide | June 18, 2008 6:53 AM
Why because the Viper SRT-10 coupe and roadster at 100K or so can murder European cars on the track(corners) that cost 4-5 times as much ? Why the Viper? because its 8.4L engine makes 600hp now EASY ensuring the motor is under minimal stress. Also meaning that your Viper engine will last much longer and be much cheaper to keep running than an F430 among other cars. Why the Viper ? because on the highway it can get about 25-26mpg due to the engine revving at 1400rpm in 6th on the highway... I dont blame you bro...you hate on an Great American car and call it crap out of pure prejuidice. Deep down you might even know that the Viper is better than its competition in ever way except for "interior" but u ignore it because of your ignorance. From day 1(1994) the Viper was built for the track. The engine might not be complicated...but the rest of the car is very well thought out.

now GM has the answer to the GT-R and the 911, let's see how it compares. ZR1 vs GT-R V spec vs 911 GT2, now i would love to see that.

by boyke69 | June 18, 2008 8:27 AM
Niice! As a huge Porsche fan I have to agree this is a very very nice car. Not a GT2, but still nice :P Joke aside: It's good to see some nice intercontinental competition between the best Europe, Japan and the US has to offer!

The aesthetics are starting to grow on me..

by 122 | June 18, 2008 11:52 AM
Great car, great engine that will probably never die, transmission is bulletproof, but where this car fails to impress me for the 103k they ask for is the interior, i cannot stand the cheap plastic climate control and radio also the plastic aluminum trim. But i guess i'm just picky.

I think I need to let you European Forum friends in on an American national secret. Our country's love affair with the vette is one inch wide and 10 miles deep. There are some eighth graders and some balding old Vette club member guys who talk about this car, that's mostly it. You can have 100 car conversations between ones where the Vette is even mentioned.

What's worse than that? The few less than 60 year olds that drive these things have, as a group, horrible reputations. The car is often joked about as being a p-extender for shortly endowed jerks. Two women where I work were talking about looking for a man today. I tested this out by saying, hey I've been seeing this new guy around in a Corvette. The reply "Everyone knows those guys are jerks" .

by V6s_stink | June 19, 2008 6:01 AM
My point isn't so much to rub salt into the drivers of vettes, either the normal car guys or those who feel inferior and give all of them the shortly bad reputation. It is to correct the misconception that Americans like to shout to the world about this car. Maybe some Car Magazines and GM do, 95% of the rest of us have little comment.
