The Goodwood Festival of Speed is about to get underway once again this July and what would one of the largest classical car events in the world be without at least one major reveal. This year Audi will take the honors with the world debut of a replica of their 1939 Auto Union 'Silverarrow' Type D.

Non other than Nick Mason, Pink Floyd drummer and European counterpart of 'car nut' Jay Leno, will be the one to put the old timer through its maiden drive on July 11. Audi and UK based Crosthwaite & Gardiner took four years to replicate the two time Grand Prix winning car.

Thomas Frank, Head of Audi Tradition, commented: "We are delighted that we now have this car in our collection. And where better to give it its first outing than in the UK? We believe that this gesture is a fitting tribute to the people whose unique craftsmanship has brought this extraordinary car back to life."

Nick Mason said: "I must have done something right last year if Audi Tradition is now prepared to let me take to the wheel for this maiden trip. But seriously, it's a huge honour, which I sincerely appreciate."

gorgeous car, well done Audi for this revival. the german racers of the 30's were quite ahead of their time.. though for me, I think the Typ C was the real milestone, the real hero that started everything. of course, everybody remembers the Typ D for it's successes, but the initiator in so many ways was the 16 cyl. Typ C

Do the 1938 C-type next time. V16, 460bhp and 330km/h, the true nestor of all supercars.
