The American market is getting a much anticipated Infiniti G range upgrade for the 2009 model year. Already available in Europe, although with less horsepower, the G35 sedan gets the new 328-hp 3.7-liter V6 engine – now designated G37 Sedan. Also available in Europe, the G37 Coupe for North America gets all-wheel-drive – now designated G37x. And yet again, Europe lends the new 7-speed automatic transmission for all North American Infiniti G models.

However, the really big news, which does not come from Europe, is the addition of an all-new Infiniti G37 Convertible model. The G37 Convertible makes its public debut in Los Angeles this November with sales starting in the first quarter of 2009. The 2009 G37 Sedan goes on sale in September 2008 as well as the G37x AWD.

INFINITI ELEVATES 2009 G LINEUP WITH INSPIRIN

When you have a vehicle line – say the Infiniti G – that has chalked up award after award, topped comparison test after comparison test, and endeared itself to a growing legion of passionate owners, what do you do for an encore? If you happen to be a world-class performance luxury brand – say like Infiniti – the answer is simple: Everything. The popular Infiniti G roars into the 2009 model year with an extensive array of changes, including:

  • The addition of an all-new Infiniti G37 Convertible model, slated to launch in the first quarter of 2009
  • A new 328-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 engine for the Infiniti G Sedan – now designated the G37 Sedan
  • A new all-wheel drive model for the Infiniti G Coupe, the G37x
  • A new 7-speed automatic transmission for all Infiniti G models (6-speed manuals transmissions also available)

“A little success makes you want to try harder. A lot of success makes you want to blow the doors off the competition again – which we’re poised to do with the new, intensified Infiniti G lineup for 2009,” said Ben Poore, Infiniti’s vice president of marketing. “Year after year we strive to offer our customers one of the freshest product lineups in the industry – which we’ve done again in 2009 with the new second-generation Infiniti FX, upcoming G Convertible and the enhanced G37 Coupe and G37 Sedan.”

2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible

The all-new G37 Convertible, the first-ever open-air G, is set for a mid-2009 model year introduction. Based on the current G37 Coupe, the G Convertible promises stunningly seductive styling and G-worthy dynamic performance. The new G37 Convertible will feature a three-piece automatic retracting hardtop, to keep a coupe-like roofline, and available unique interior treatment. Audio and HVAC systems have been enhanced to provide an inviting experience with the top up or down.

The all-new Infiniti G37 Convertible is set to make its world debut at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

2009 Infiniti G37 Sport Sedan

The Infiniti G premium high-performance sport sedan receives a significant upgrade under the skin in 2009 with the addition of a new VQ37VHR “VVEL” 3.7-liter V6 rated at 328 horsepower. It is mated to a new 7-speed automatic transmission or close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission.

Now designated as the Infiniti G37 Sedan, other major changes include new available sport brakes with 4-piston front/2-piston rear calipers and large 14-inch front and 13.8-inch rear rotors, a new sport 18-inch wheel design and standard Scratch Shield paint (self-healing clearcoat finish).

The 2009 G37 Sedan is available in four models – G37, G37 Journey, G37S Sport 6MT and G37x AWD. It goes on sale in September 2008.

2009 Infiniti G37 Sport Coupe

For 2009, the G37 Coupe’s performance envelope expands with the addition of a new G37x AWD model with advanced ATESSA E-TSÔ all-wheel drive system. Also new for 2009 is a 7-speed automatic transmission with Drive Sport (DS) Mode and Downshift Rev Matching (the G37 Coupe is also available with a 6-speed manual transmission).

All 2009 G37 Coupes receive standard Scratch Shield paint (self-healing clearcoat finish). The 2009 G37 Coupe is available in four models – G37, G37 Journey, G37S Sport 6MT and G37x AWD – each with standard 330-horsepower 3.7-liter VQ-series V6 with VVEL technology. It goes on sale in September 2008.

it is big news because they are getting a non detuned version of the 3.7. The EU version only make's 320hp.

Is the G37x 2door? I surely hope they finally have an awd 2door car on the market sometime soon.

Surly they would bring out a 2 door with the atessa all wheel drive system, wouldn't surprise me if a turner strapped a couple of the r35 GT-R turbos on the the 3.7l that's already producing 328hp, it would be a weapon. Here the 2007 skyline 370gt produces 333hp that's not bad considering the 2001+ skylines don't come out turbo charged any more. but lack the atessa eta all wheel drive system, this would give people who can not afford the GT-R a cheaper option with updated skyline performance,

you cant do that. Its a different engine. You would have to drop the engine of the GTR also and I dont think thats an easy thing to do. The VQ series do not like turbos on them. If you want you can drop the older 300zx engine and tune it to 500-600 hp easy. it would cost much less and be reliable.

the g37 sedan is the worst looking g37... it just doesnt look good

by BabyMilo | August 7, 2008 10:27 AM
@pzigly

The VQ ain't the toyota GR engine. There is no problem tuning them they are better and lighter than the old VG. There are lots of company's that all ready have got 600bhp out of the VQ37VHR.

by STJ | August 7, 2008 2:07 PM
thats what i thought too. Ive seen them turbo charged but i dont think its as reliable as the other engines that can be turboed by nissan. U cant just bolt on the GTR turbos cuz it is not the same engine.

by pzigly | August 7, 2008 8:46 PM
DATSUN

by carfan58 | August 7, 2008 7:01 PM
FYI datsuns were supposed to be called nissans but nissan was afraid to change the name even before the 60's.

Toyotas build quality used to be so bad that when they first arrived to the US they had to be sent back.

And all 911 porsches have evolved from bugs. So technically you should call it turbo bug.

I really dont see the point y people keep calling them Datsuns still. Everyone starts from the bottom. This car is more exciting than some manufacturers entire line up.

by pzigly | August 7, 2008 9:05 PM
ya there just datsun crap.

by lemonsqueezer2000 | August 8, 2008 5:27 AM

"And yet again, Europe lends the new 7-speed automatic transmission for all North American Infiniti G models."

Isn't the 7speed automatic asian first? i.e. Lexus, cough cough toyota.

by Joe_Limon | August 7, 2008 11:21 PM
Hey pzigly, hows your altima going is it very economical? i was looking into a new skyline with the 8 speed tiptronic but think ill settle for the Nissan stagea X FOUR 2004 it comes with the 2.5v6 Di and 5 speed tiptronic and standard 220hp but most of all this model has the atessa awd system that's optional via switch, the stagea is the station wagon version of the skyline they also come out in a turbo charged awd set up but standard models are rwd. you should have a look at the selection here check out trademe nz and search Nissan theres all ages of skylines and the new GT-R.

by mortz | August 8, 2008 12:36 AM
Theres a nissan skyline gt8 here with 8speed tiptronic. and that comes in some 2002 models and later.

by mortz | August 8, 2008 12:28 AM
the stagea is kind of big though. I would get the GT8 eventhough its hard to turbo them you can still get like 350 hp out of them or a little more without turbo. I think it should out handle the stagea

by pzigly | August 8, 2008 9:47 AM
I really like Infiniti, they make nice cars. The G37 is really hot.

by Speedoholic | August 8, 2008 11:02 PM
If i get the GT8 i will proberly leave it stock but i need the room of the stagea for my business and hunting and fishing trips etc, but ill try and convince my wife that having two nissans with v6s is realy an ethical move and then ill take the gt8 when i don't need the stagea and have some fun!!!
