As soon as the Fiat 500 Abarth was previewed to a special press audience, the Italian automaker confirmed an even more powerful version was in the pipeline. The news came somewhat as a relief, we had expected the 500 Abarth to go head to head with the dominating 172hp Mini Cooper S, so when the initial power figure of 135hp came out, the dissapointment was plain to see.

This disappointment proved to be a little premature when the model's launching “Opening edition” possessed a more respectable 160hp, displaying a little more of the true potential of the model. This special edition model was undoubtedly a teaser for the Fiat 500 Abarth SS which has been caught out testing in these latest spy shots. The more powerful version is easily recognisable by its twin exhaust pipes poking out its rear end as a posed to the single one found on the regular version.

We should see the full unveiling of the model at the Paris Motor Show next month before it goes on full sale in November. A Big thanks goes out to Michael for sending in the pics.

this car is so cool do they sell it in left hand drive ?

Really? You think so?

I hope they sell it in center hand drive. Doesn't look like much room for even the driver.

Tom Ford, car TV presenter, fits. He’s about 6 foot 2 to 6 foot 4, and has a "big bum" (how own words – see video 2mins 52 sec)

Do they sell it in left hand drive? You have to be American to ask a question like that, surely...

I believe Fiat is thinking of bringing the 500 to the USA, but I really don't believe there is a market for it there (nor do they have the dealers). Not sure if I would buy one, where the roads are so large it is virtually impossible to have an accident...

The MINI worked (in some states anyway) as they rode off the back of the BMW name. (and image is so-so important in such a materialistic market!) The MINI dealer I looked at was attached to a BMW dealership, and I was quoted a 12 month wait for an "S" (in 2004) plus a lease cost of $700 pcm...!!

When I told the dealer, I could lease a 7-series BMW for the same money he said,

"Let me look at that again, hey y'know I pressed the wrong button...! How does $3?? Sound…?"

You think a dealer that quotes monthly leases day-in, day out would think something was a bit off? Guess car dealers are a bunch of Arthur Daley’s everywhere...
