Following recent rumours of a fully electric powered Cayman prototype, it has been revealed that the Porsche specialty tuner, Ruf, has in fact developed a fully electric powered 997 prototype. It features a 204hp (150kW) electric motor producing 650 Nm (480 lb-ft) of torque.
Despite carrying 550 kilograms (96 battery cells each weighing 5.6 kg) worth of Axeon lithium-ion batteries, the 911 goes from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than 7 seconds. After some mathematical acrobatics, a theoretical top speed of 224 km/h (139mph) is possible given its 1900 kg weight and 160 amps per cell. The 911 EV has a driving range of 250-300 km (155-180 miles) under normal driving conditions.

...and 150 liter trunk has gone... . What we have then is cleaner air in the place where Porsches exhaust pipes were and additional pollutions where that electricity was produced. All that good is possible only by giving away some pleasure of life. In that case it will be a driving pleasure hence pleasure of owning beautiful car was already taken away by very manufacturer of this car.

It always amazes me how fast a small private company can come up with these new inventions way faster than the big 3. They may be more expensive, but then again you are talking about a small company.

well, i dont think porsche AG wants to show off an electric 997 with a thousand pounds of battery. so it is pointless for them to work on it. look at how ugly the panamera is. if they actually spend time on R&D, that would be something they need to work on first.

RUF IS NOT A PORSCHE TUNER! Ruf is an independent car manufacturer in its own right. Porsche merely delivers those parts to Ruf that they don't manufacture themselves.

i appreciate RUF as one of the best companies to manufacture sportscars, but who on earth needs a elctric 911? i mean the 911 is supposed to be a real sportscar and and therefore it needs real sound and speed. i mean in 20 years okay but nowadays? naaah

Cool it guys! Nothing lasts for ever, Internal combustion engines soon have to die, ofcourse we are going to miss them, but they have to give way for alternate power source. The pace of electric car developent is somewhat slow, I predict some well established brannds would soon die giving place to emerging ones.

We still have at least another 50 years before the internal combustion engine is even close to "played out". Don't get your little eco-hopes up just yet. There are still more efficiency gains to be made!

For sure they will die out if they don't make changes. The internal combustion engine will have to make way for electric motors whether manufacturers like it or not. They're resistant to change because they've spent billions (guess) on developing ICEs since its inception. Electric powered cars are still deep in the development stage, simply because they haven't had anywhere near as much time or money dedicated to them. If tuners continue to produce cars like this, provided they're any good, and they sell decently, the larger manufacturers will likely direct more of their efforts towards electric power... hopefully!

lol, well just wait and see soon we'll be hearing rumours of Lamborghini and Ferrari developing an all ellectric car soon. This whole business with all electric cars is a joke. Rather develop a vehicle that runs on ethonal or bio- oh wait they are have but the auto manufacturers and the government are closing the door on it because then they'd lose money on the taxes for the fuel.
Think about it, the power you putting in to charging these so called batteries will be putting power stations on overload and it's only a matter of time before we have a huge power outage again. and then how much money will that cost to repair.
Screw the government and screw these eco freaks. Earth is already F%#$ed, nothing we do now will make it any better.

there is a good point dmanero, nobody thinks about the consequences when all cars are suddenly charged on your home power net! the infrastructure is simply not capable of doing so. not in Europe and less so in the states where we hang our power lines over trees in the alley...
still the advancements that are achieved by those smallish players put the the rest ashame. just like little google started fighting altavista and co only a mere ten years ago - imagine!

Very True Muellr, Take BMw for instance, they have a hidrogen car all setup and ready for production, yet it costs so much money to reproduce, it's not worth the money. And In the states they are using biofuel and ethonal for their racing series (some of them), which is cheaper to make and safe for the enviroment, but the auto companies and government refuses to look in to it becuase then the fuel companies will be in a up roar and pull their gas out the countries. and we all know who runs the countries, the corporations, because with out their money the country goes down, hell look at the economy in the states, and this all started with a top company going bankrupt.

I'm sure that if the effort to rely on fossil fuels stops with powering vehicles you would be perfectly justified in your statement. I don't know anything about how the US runs, but the Government/power companies would be blind, ignorant or just plain stupid to ignore the need for alternative power sources. Here's my vision; charging my car from my solar powered home, as well as having dedicated alternative source charging stations replace petrol stations (solar probably wouldn't cut it here). With continued developments in the same vein as regenerative braking, you will get more distance out of each charge.

Mr. Alois Ruf should be congratulated for his brave , pioneering efforts towards this project.... a rather environmentally - responsible initiative from a high-performance petrol-powered car manufacturer on a par with Italian supercar marques . He even made the Porsche 997 properly very good to look at with the deletion of those UGH-LY nasal air intake apertures that ruin the once-sleek 993S of old . I certainly hope that storage battery technology be further improved so that its present bulk and limited operating range could be optimised for the better .

that is definitely the WRONG way to go.
you don't take an allready developed preexisting supercar (that is a legend of motoring history) and turn it "eco friendly" by adding tons of batteries.
electric cars must be developed correctly froma scratch as was the Tesla Roadster and is the Lightning GT.
who cares about engine sound.?. time to have some peace on the streets.
and NO.!. no need to wait another 50 years for electric performance on the road. the Tesla Roadster is just the proof of that. & @ a much better price...
